Heart of a lion: U12s see off Bedford Thunder 83–66

NHK started the game with our regular starting five, supported by several of our developing players who were making their National League debuts. Bedford Thunder travelled with strong parental support, but our own parents matched their energy throughout, setting the tone for a competitive and spirited contest.

For the first three quarters, the game was evenly balanced. Both teams traded baskets, and it genuinely felt like it could go right down to the wire. Every one of our boys gave everything they had. Fatigue crept in, mistakes happened and basic fouls were conceded, but that was simply the price of their relentless effort.

Going into the final quarter, four of our five starters were sitting on four fouls each, creating a tense situation. What happened next made me incredibly proud: the second unit insisted we push for the win and willingly sacrificed their minutes for the good of the team. That selflessness and unity epitomised what NHK basketball is all about.

With the starting five returning for the last stretch, the boys surged ahead and built an insurmountable lead. Their composure, teamwork and determination sealed the victory. The win belonged to the entire squad, including those who didn’t feature this time but supported brilliantly from the sidelines.

We still have areas to improve. Some fundamental errors and avoidable fouls crept in as tiredness affected concentration. But effort was never in question. Not once did anyone give up.

We now head into our third match with a 2–0 record. A formidable challenge awaits us against Milton Keynes, but regardless of the result, I cannot fault the heart, commitment and character shown by every player today. They all demonstrated the heart of a lion.

A proud moment for the team, the parents, the individual players and the club.

Go Knights.
