Bedford Thunder U16 Boys NPL

U16s Boys Reds
85–88
WON
In a rollercoaster contest that ebbed and flowed until the final buzzer, both sides gave their all in a highly competitive but good-spirited encounter.
First quarter (24–24): NHK Red started well and gained an early lead before Bedford White pegged them back, leading to several frantic lead changes before the teams ended the opening frame locked at 24 points apiece.
Second quarter (54–33): After Bedford briefly threatened with a quick six-point surge, NHK Red took over. A dominant, high-scoring run saw our squad blow the game open, storming into the half-time break with a commanding 54–33 lead. The bench players stepped up massively, contributing crucial baskets at pivotal moments to keep the momentum alive.
Third quarter (69–65): Bedford brought on their big men to start the second half and mounted a heavy fightback. NHK Red weathered the storm and did just enough to keep them at arm’s length, holding a slim 69–65 advantage heading into the final period.
Fourth quarter (88–85): Bedford snatched a two-point lead just one minute into the quarter, setting up a high-stakes finale. NHK Red showed immense composure under pressure, capitalising on Bedford’s mounting foul trouble, which was partly down to them fouling to slow the clock. Steady shooting from the free-throw line allowed NHK Red to regain the foothold they needed to see out the win.
This was a fantastic team performance against strong opposition. While it could have been a more comfortable win, it provided valuable lessons in clock management when closing out tight games, and in boxing out. There were lots of positives and, whilst there remain areas to refine, which will come with playing more as a team, if these levels of commitment and competitiveness are maintained, the boys have a fun season ahead.
